Abstract
Systemic injection of antigen is one of the approaches that reproducib ly induces effective antigen-specific hyporesponsiveness. Here, Roland Liblau and colleagues discuss the cellular and molecular bases of suc h tolerance, review the current use of this therapeutic strategy in ex perimental organ-specific autoimmune diseases and analyse what steps a re necessary to make this approach suitable for clinical use.
