Critical points and lines in magnetic field space define the boundarie
s of different magnetization states between which the magnetization ma
y ''jump,'' leading to hysteresis. We calculate the changes in these b
oundaries due to magnetoelastic coupling to applied stresses, and obta
in the critical stresses required to eliminate jumping in specific cas
es. These results may provide a way of reducing or eliminating hystere
sis in large magnetostriction materials. (C) 1997 American Institute o
