Abstract
Communications traffic in the world's fiber-optic backbone network is growing more than 10% per year and the growth rate is accelerating, Th e ever-increasing bandwidth demands are being met by an array of techn ological innovations including higher time-division multiplex (TDM) tr ansmission rates combined with wavelength-division multiplex (WDM) ove rlays.
