Factors contributing to the growth and diffusion of new imaging techno
logies are discussed. The benefits derived from implementing and using
new technologies are carefully evaluated against the associated costs
to both patients and service providers. The need to invest in early s
cientific assessment of a new imaging technology in order to prevent w
asted aquisition and utilisation later on is highlighted. Such assessm
ent might involve evaluating the ability of the technology to improve
diagnosis, positively impact on treatment plans and, above all, improv
e health.
