A model representing a white water network has been developed to chara
cterize its dynamic behavior. This study focusses on key process model
ing issues: the process flow sheet, steady-state mass and energy balan
ces, and a dynamic model and its control system. The system was distur
bed by web breaks in the paper machine. During simulations, the manipu
lated variable used to manage broke inventories was the broke reuse ra
te. The results emphasize the importance of the process and control de
sign in reducing the impact of perturbations.
