The problem of fault detection and diagnosis of the state (good, opera
ble, etc.) of technical plants is considered. The existing algorithms
are shown to realize mostly one of two approaches, cabled here classif
ication and indicator approaches. Using the principle of matching vp t
wo systems by their input-output: sets, which is formulated in the pre
sent paper, a third approach based on solving the so-called abstract p
roblem of fault detection and diagnosis is proposed. It is expected th
at the development of this approach and the realization of the corresp
onding algorithms will enable one not only to generalize and represent
in a new way the existing methods for fault detection and diagnosis,
but also do reveal their additional capabilities.
