The hybrid Imaging Silicon Pixel Array (ISPA) tube combines the best a
spects of image intensification with new possibilities offered by inte
grated electronics. The anode of the ISPA tube is a matrix of small si
licon pixels directly detecting with a high spatial resolution electro
ns emitted by the photocathode. The pixels are individually bump-bonde
d to an integrated electronic read-out chip, allowing high gain, high
speed and low noise. This paper presents a detailed study of the singl
e-photon detection efficiency of the tube, and concludes with perspect
ives offered by the development of new electronics and tube designs.
