Molecular, hydrodynamic, and thermal characteristics of polyimide base
d on 3,4,3',4'-tetracarboxydiphenyl oxide and 1-(4'-aminophenyl)-3-ami
noethyladamantane are studied. The constants in the Mark-Kuhn-Houwink
relations between the molecular mass of a polymer and its intrinsic vi
scosity and sedimentation constant are obtained. It is shown that the
polymer under study is flexible, has a Kuhn segment length of 46 Angst
rom, and contains no long-chain branches. The presence of a bulky adam
antylene fragment and hinged methylene moieties provides the existence
of a rubberlike elasticity region (from 240 to 275 degrees C). The ki
netic parameters of thermal degradation of the polymer are obtained by
dynamic thermogravimetric analysis in air and under an inert atmosphe
re.
