The development of a regular microrelief on the surface of the films o
f PET and rubbers during their tensile drawing was studied by means of
electron microscopy. The surface of the films was coated with a thin
platinum layer. The period of the formed microrelief was found to be c
ontrolled by the compression of polymer, its mechanical properties, an
d thickness of the deposited layer. This phenomenon was considered wit
hin the framework of the stability loss of the thin layer, which was i
nduced by the compression of rigid coating on the surface of the polym
er film. A quantitative analysis of this phenomenon was carried out, a
nd a fair correlation between theory and experiment was obtained.
