Capillary electrochromatography (CEC) is currently undergoing a rapid
phase of investigation and the number of associated developments is ex
ponentially expanding. This review provides a comprehensive overview o
f the current status of CEC in terms of both technological advances an
d application. Quantitative aspects of CEC are discussed and the novel
use of CEC for assay purposes is demonstrated by determining the nico
tinamide content in a vitamin formulation sample. The relative merits
of CEC compared to HPLC and CE are critically assessed. It is conclude
d that, with the current rate of CEC development, that there will soon
be a further routine analytical alternative and supplement to both HP
LC and CE.
