This paper describes the procedure for determining AOX (Adsorbable Org
anic Halogens), referring to the two main carbon adsorption methods, a
nd to the procedures of combustion in an oven and to the coulometric t
itration of the halogen. Tests performed with the method of adsorption
on a microcolumn are described and the analytical accuracy briefly di
scussed. The paper also describes the possible fields of application o
f the AOX technique, its limitations and extensions such as the EOX (E
xtractable Organic Halogens), and POX (Purgcable Organic Halogens) tec
hniques.
