Multifactorial (management related) diseases cause considerable losses
in the Hungarian animal production. Demand for introduction of produc
tion-oriented planned animal health programmes to the swine and dairy
industry has aroused also in Hungary to cope with multifactorial disea
ses. To do so, among others, the followings ale suggested: Training of
consultant veterinarians should be given priority both in the graduat
e and postgraduate education. New forms of information flow towards sw
ine and buiatric practitioners should be implemented. Establishment of
slaughterhouse disease monitoring and surveillance programmes should
he subsidised. An overview was given (MUIRHEAD) on the effects of majo
r swine diseases on time requested to reach slaughter weight. Integrat
ed quality control should be introduced in swine production. Long term
conception of the advisory network should be elaborated. Rules of est
ablishing new swine and dairy units should be harmonised with those of
tile EU countries. Udder health programmes adapted individually to th
e dairy farm should be applied. Prevention of metabolic disorders of d
airy cows should be based on metabolic profile tests. An overview was
given (BRYDL) on the frequency rate of metabolic disorders in dairy co
