During the last years a lot of research activities have been directed
to point out the properties of Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) for ap
plications in the field of electric power engineering. A survey of the
use of ANN for the realization of powerful measuring algorithms with
special interest in power system protection is presented in this paper
. After a brief description of requirements for modern power protectio
n systems different application areas for ANN in the field of signal p
rocessing, fault classification and fault location are discussed. All
these methods are related to measuring algorithms for power system pro
tection.
