Describes the development of the Sustaining Oncology Studies (SOS) pro
ject, a World Wide Web (WWW) resource for organizing information on on
cology available via the Internet, and for supplying users with locall
y held material. Focuses on a particular section of the SOS system: th
e Virtual Cancer Library (ViCLib) project (URL <http://sos.unige.it/vi
clib.html>); which includes a database of regional and national librar
y catalogues and some specialized hypertext links to sources of specia
lized oncological information. ViCLib was conceived and developed by t
he National Institute for Cancer Research, Genoa, Italy and the Depart
ment of Clinical and Experimental Oncology, Genoa University. Hyperlin
ks are provided to an international network of online public access ca
talogues (OPACs), international document delivery agencies, electronic
periodicals; and specialized navigation tools and facilities such as:
electronic mail; File Transfer Protocol (FTP); and Telnet.
