Tv. Yuneva et al., SPATIAL VARIABILITY OF CALANUS-EUXINUS LI PID-CONTENT IN CONNECTION WITH CHLOROPHYLL CONCENTRATION AND PHYTOPLANKTON BIOMASS, Okeanologia, 37(5), 1997, pp. 745-752
Lipid content of Calanus euxinus (for V copepodites and females) was i
nvestigated in different regions of the Black Sea with large horizonta
l gradients of chlorophyll ''a'' concentrations and biomass of phytopl
ankton (total, different sizes, groups and species). Linear correlatio
ns between total lipids, wax esters, triacylglicerols, phospholipids c
oncentration of C. euxinus and primary production characteristics in t
he surrounding water were calculated. These correlations allow us to d
isplay not only simple trophical relationship of Calanus with phytopla
nkton but also show the selective role of individual species of algae
in forming lipid reserves by Calanus. It also becomes clear that spati
al variability of chlorophyll ''a'' concentrations and biomass of phyt
oplankton strongly correlate only with those lipids (wax esters and ph
ospholipids) of C. euxinus which are reserved and contained in organis
ms for a long time. Correlation does not appear for high-speed metabol
ized triacyglycerols.
