J. Kamphues, RECOMMENDED PROCEDURE TO BOVINE PRACTITIO NERS IN CASE OF HERD PROBLEMS CAUSED BY FEEDING FAULTS, Praktische Tierarzt, 78(12), 1997, pp. 1066
This paper is an aid for bovine practitioners who are confronted with
herd health problems that may be caused by faults in feeding, by lacki
ng quality of ingredients or the used concentrates or the ration in ge
neral. In the beginning of those cases there are suspicious facts only
that have to be critically evaluated and checked by the veterinarian.
Methods and procedure to be concerned are described briefly, especial
ly for the reason that eventually recourse is in discussion. Potential
ly liable to recourse is the producer of the concentrate or the supple
ment, if marked deviations in their composition or quality are found.
The information needed by the veterinarian derive from an intensive an
amnesis, sensoric evaluation of feeds offered to the herd, calculation
of the energy and nutrient supply, clinical investigations of sufferi
ng cattle and from investigations of feeds arranged by the veterinaria
n. Even if the details of anamnesis and further methods are not descri
bed in this paper, considering the principles summarized here should d
efend the practitioner from blunders that can often be observed in suc
h cases.
