Objectives. - The aims of this study were : a) to determine whether pa
tients with duodenal ulcer treated with a proton pump inhibitor may fa
st during the month of Ramadan, b) to evaluate the result of the treat
ment in this condition. Methods. - Fifty-seven patients with acute duo
denal ulcer confirmed by endoscopy were included in the study All the
patients received 30 mg lansoprazole per day during 4 weeks. After ran
domization, patients of group I (n = 27) were dispensed from fasting,
while those of group II (n = 30) fasted Endoscopy was performed at the
end of the month of the fast. Results. - The course of symptoms was n
ot different in groups I and II. There were no ulcer complications. He
aling rates at endoscopy were 88.8% and 90% in groups I and II, respec
tively Fasting had no influence on the result of duodenal ulcer treatm
ent by lansoprazole which was well tolerated Conclusion. - Patients wi
th duodenal ulcer treated with lansoprazole may fast without running a
ny risk.
