Abstract
In this paper we develop a simple theoretical model to focus on the de bate related to the granting of product patents in the developing coun tries. We discuss conditions under which ''sleeping patents'' might em erge. We argue that, for ''poor'' countries, allowing product patents cannot be justified on pure economic grounds.
