We show how to compute the optical spectra of quantum dots (QDs) from
the analysis of the scattering of an electromagnetic plane wave. The m
ethod used combines the microscopic calculation of quantum dot exciton
eigenfunctions and the macroscopic Stahl's density matrix approach fo
r the optical functions. The eigenfunctions and eigenenergies of excit
ons are computed in the infinite barrier model for dots of spherical s
hape using the effective-mass approximation. Numerical results are giv
en and discussed for the case of GaAs/Ga1-xAlxAs QD.
