A new charge-transfer complex involving cadmium as the electron-donor,
TCNQ as the electron-acceptor and the 1,10 phenanthroline (phen) as t
he hetero-aromatic ligand, has been synthesized by means of an electro
chemical reaction. The average charge on TCNQ, the transition metal ox
idation state and the charge-transfer degree of Cd-phen-TCNQ are obtai
ned using spectrophotometric measurements and photoelectron spectrosco
py. The results ape compared with those determined for Cd-TCNQ, in ord
er to obtain insight into the effect of the 1,10 phenanthroline on the
electron-transfer reaction. The behavior of the electrical d.c. condu
ctivity vs. the temperature shows that Cd-phen-TCNQ has a room tempera
ture conductivity of about 0.1 Ohm(-1) cm(-1), which is more than one
order of magnitude higher than that of the Cd-TCNQ species, and an ene
rgy gap of the order 0.09 eV.
