Cable TV networks are expected to become promising candidates of broad
band access networks because of their capability of large penetration
rate and broad bandwidth. However, there are a number of technical cha
llenges to overcome in order to make this a successful solution for ac
cess network. One problem is ingress noise, which is the burst noise s
pecific to cable TV networks. Another problem is limited upstream band
width, which is shared with thousands of subscribers. We have investig
ated the characteristics of ingress noise in detail and developed a ne
w multiple access control protocol for cable modem, MPRG (Multi Priori
ty Reservation and Grant). This protocol improves the ingress noise to
lerance and provides highly efficient channel utilization. This paper
provides details of the proposed protocol and the performance evaluati
on of cable modem system implementing this protocol.
