In this paper, experimental results on the (sub)-femtosecond dynamics
of adsorbate-substrate charge transfer processes are reported. A new m
ethod to study such phenomena by a combination of high-resolution exci
tation and decay spectroscopy of adsorbate core resonances is presente
d. The results were obtained by using the enhanced capabilities regard
ing high-resolution soft X-ray spectroscopy offered by third generatio
n synchrotron sources. Timescales for charge transfer processes for ph
ysisorbed and chemisorbed adsorbates are derived and compared to expec
tations from resonance lineprofiles.
