Abstract
We construct local minimum solutions for the semilinear bistable equat ion by minimizing the corresponding functional near some approximate s olutions, under the hypothesis that certain global minimum solutions a re isolated. The key is a certain characterization of Palais-Smale seq uences and a proof that the functional takes higher values away from t he approximate solutions. (C) 1997 Academic Press.
