The reaction of pyridine and methylpyridines with alpha, beta-unsatura
ted carboxylic acids, such as: acrylic, methacrylic, crotonic, cinnami
c, itaconic, fumaric and maleic acid, as well as the reactions of di-a
nd trimethylpyridines with acrylic and maleic acids were studied. The
reactions developed by such compounds may be, actually, considered as
a competition between addition and neutralization, resulting betaine a
nd/or salt. The factors influencing the development reaction are the c
hemical structure of the amine, acid and solvent, as well as the react
ion duration. The order of reactivity for the same reactions was estab
lished by half-times. ?he H-1-NMR methodology was applied for elucidat
ing both the chemically obtained structures and the half-times.
