The optimal motion of a piston fitted with a cylinder containing an id
eal gas is examined. The gas is heated ata given rate f(t) and coupled
to a heat bath with a heat transfer law q proportional to Delta(T-1)
for a finite amount of time. The optimal path which maximizes the expa
nsion work is obtained. Several applications of the optimal path are a
