The polycondensation of adipic acid with m-xylylene dibromide was perf
ormed using 1,8-diazabicyclo-[5.4.0]undec-7-ene (DBU) as a base in mix
tures of dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) with water or in plain water. The r
eactions proceeded smoothly even in water to give the corresponding po
lyesters, although the rate of the reaction decreased gradually with i
ncreasing water in the mixture. Polymers prepared in the aqueous solut
ion had higher molecular weights (M-n, 7700-9200)than the polymers syn
thesized in DMSO (M-n, 6100-6400).
