This paper deals with the wrinkling and buckling of elastic plates sub
jected to in-plane and transverse external forces. With the aid of a n
ewly developed dynamic relaxation method, the well-known dynamic crite
rion of stability was used to predict the bifurcation point. Some typi
cal components in engineering practice (i.e. annular, circular and rec
tangular plates) were investigated in detail. The reliability of the m
ethod for the analyses of post-wrinkling and post-buckling was demonst
rated. Based on the analytical studies performed, approximate formulas
for determining the critical load and number of waves in the wrinklin
g mode were obtained. It found that the initial elastic wrinkling mode
of plates subjected to bending was different from that of plastic wri
nkling. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science Ltd.
