Abstract
The absorption and desorption of fuel into oil films is considered to be responsible for a significant proportion of the unburnt hydrocarbon emissions from spark ignition engines. A model has been developed whi ch allows the prediction of the effect of engine parameters on this so urce. Results show that engine speed, operating temperature and oil-fi lm thickness are controlling parameters. The work highlights the link with ring pack tribology and makes some estimates on the overall effec t of temperature and engine speed.
