ON THE FLUID-MECHANICS OF BILABIAL PLOSIVES

In this paper we present a review of some fluid mechanical phenomena i nvolved in bilabial plosive sound production, As a basis for further d iscussion, firstly an in vivo experimental set-up is described. The or der of magnitude of some important geometrical and fluid dynamical qua ntities is presented. Different theoretical flow models are then discu ssed and evaluated using in vitro measurements on a replica of the lip s and using numerical simulations. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science B.V.
