A new nondestructive method for measurement of the longitudinal profil
e of subpicosecond electron bunches is proposed. The method is based o
n measurement of spectral intensity correlations in synchrotron radiat
ion. Statistical properties of synchrotron radiation produced by a bun
ch passing the bending magnet are considered The signal-to-noise ratio
is analyzed in terms of the degeneracy parameter. The degeneracy para
meter increases approximately as a third power of the wavelength which
makes the visible range of synchrotron radiation to be a natural choi
ce for the spectral intensity correlation measurement. An example of t
he experimental set-up is also described.
