Abstract
The time-dependent failure behavior of polycrystalline mullite was stu died at room temperature in water. Two different processes, the slow c rack growth of preexisting flaws and the microstructural damaging due to stress-enhanced chemical reactions, are suggested to be the dominat ing mechanisms for failures of material at the low stress ranges, resp ectively.
