Plastic deformation plays an important role in enhancing the texture a
nd magnetic anisotropies of Nd-Fe-B magnets made from melt-spun ribbon
s. The effects of hot deformation on texture in Nd-Fe-B magnets was ex
amined using inverse pole figures and pole figures for magnets with di
fferent % die-upsets. It is shown that W-50, the average of widths of
the 50% intensity contour in pole figure, can be used as a good quanti
tative index of texture. With increase in % die-upset from 50% to 70%,
W-50 systematically decreases from 32.3 degrees to 18.4 degrees. The
energy product, (BH)(max), increased from 17 MGOe for a 0% die-upset m
agnet to 46 MGOe for a 70% die-upset magnet. (C) 1997 American Institu
