E. Roget et al., INTERNAL SEICHE CLIMATOLOGY IN A SMALL LAKE WHERE TRANSVERSAL AND 2NDVERTICAL-MODES ARE USUALLY OBSERVED, Limnology and oceanography, 42(4), 1997, pp. 663-673
From the analysis of thermistor chain data recorded in a small elongat
ed lake, compared with the results of numerical simulations, second ve
rtical modes of the internal seiches are shown to be active during mor
e than two-thirds of the whole stratified period, although no resonanc
e with the wind is observed. On the other hand, due to the wind patter
n, transversal seiches (mainly the first vertical mode) are also usual
ly excited and they sometimes dominate. At the end of the stratified p
eriod, however, when the thermocline is very sharp, first vertical mod
es-longitudinal and transversal-are the only ones that are excited. Fi
nally, due to the wind, a forced oscillation of the whole lake is exci
ted.
