The analysis of cesium dimer molecular emission bands previously obser
ved by Klyucharev and Lazarenko, and thought to be formed through reso
nant energy transfer from excited state cesium (6P) at densities excee
ding 10(15) cm(-3), suggests that they result from a resonance Raman s
cattering process. Numerical simulation based on the application of a
resonance Raman scattering model readily reproduces the observed emiss
ion and suggests a cesium dimer linewidth near 8 cm(-1). This result c
ompares favorably with the observations of excited state sodium atom-s
odium dimer interactions which also result in observed features in the
vicinity of the Na D-line due to a Raman-like scattering process. (C)
