Abstract
An experimental program has been started at COSY Julich for studies of the production and of the decay of heavy hypernuclei using the (p,K) reaction. A recoil-distance method is applied where the internal beam of COSY provides high luminosity. First experimental results on the pr oduction cross section and on the hypernucleus lifetime obtained with a U-238 target are presented.
