We report new high-resolution photoabsorption spectra of copper coveri
ng the spectral region between 3d subshell excitation using synchrotro
n radiation as the background source of continuum. The spectra were re
corded in the first order of a 3 m spectrograph equipped with a 6000 l
ine/mm holographic grating. Long Rydberg series are observed convergin
g to four conspicuous limits built on the 3d(9)4s parent ion configura
tions: 3d(10)4s S-2(1/2) --> 3d(9)4s(D-3(3,2,1), D-1(2))np and nf(J =
1). The new high-resolution data reveal numerous examples of interchan
nel interactions and autoionization effects that have been parametrize
d using the multichannel quantum defect theory.
