High-performance capillary electrophoresis (CE) and HPLC were compared
for the analysis of some enzymatically synthesised beta-lactam antibi
otics. The main advantage for CE, besides its lower operational costs,
is the short analysis time. It was further found that CE could be use
d for a variety of antibiotics and their building blocks by small adju
stments, affecting the mobility of the solutes, in the analysis method
. The compounds studied have a typical detection limit of 10 mu M for
both CE and HPLC.
