Abstract
Transformation of tobacco with a gene encoding the fungal elicitor pro tein, beta-cryptogein, resulted in resistance to the pathogen Phytopht hora parasitica var, nicotianae, Resistance was improved when the fore ign gene was in the hemizygous state, and a single amino acid substitu tion that reduced the necrotic effects of the protein also conferred s ome resistance.
