Abstract
Eighty six samples (15 fluid milk, 29 milk powder, 21 hard Ras cheese and 21 soft Damietta cheese) collected randomly from markets in Egypt were examined for organochlorine pesticides (OC) and polychlorinated b iphenyls (PBCs). The mean concentrations for the organochlorines HCB, alpha-HCH, beta-HCH, gamma-HCH, Dieldrin, DDE, DDD and DDT in milk wer e 3.35, 7.42, 14.48, 9.60, 2.71, 15.49, 54.23 and 7.67 mu g/kg fat, re spectively, while corresponding values in milk powder were 6.56, 14.85 , 6.80, 19.88, 3.76, 3.76, 25.33 and 54.62 mu g/kg fat, respectively. Ras cheese samples showed mean concentrations of 3.74, 8.65, 8.96, 9.2 6, 6.75, 11.77, 46.21 and 3.88 mu g/kg fat for HCB, alpha-HCH, beta-HC H, gamma-HCH, Dieldrin, DDE, DDD and DDT, respectively, while correspo nding values in Damietta cheese were 4.54, 11.49, 9.98, 13.04, 2.49, 6 .70, 104.73 and 2.05 mu g/kg fat, respectively. Polychlorinated biphen yls 153, 138, 180, 028, 052 and 101 showed mean values of 3.08, 2.07, 3.16, 5.37, 10.93 and 0.88 mu g/kg fat in milk samples respectively wh ile corresponding values in milk powder samples were 4.71, 3.32, 2.43, 3.15, 11.69 and 3.18 mu g/kg fat, respectively. Ras cheese samples sh owed average concentrations of 2.34, 2.10, 0.59, 4.38, 5.7 and 2.30 mu g/kg fat, Mean values found in Damietta cheese samples were 1.91, 2.1 4, 1.03, 4.57, 11.76 and 1.32 mu g/kg fat.
