A series of copper(II), nickel(II) and cobalt(III) complexes with uted
-aminothiocarbonyl)-N'-substitutedbenzamidines have been synthesized a
nd characterized. H-1 and C-13 NMR spectra have shown a mer configurat
ion for the CoL3 compounds. The NiL2 complexes have a square-planar st
ructure. Electron spin resonance spectra have shown that the presence
of a bulky substituent on the nitrogen donor atom generates a large te
trahedral distortion around the copper in CuL2 compounds. Cyclic volta
mmetry has revealed irreversible redox waves corresponding to the Cu(I
II)-Cu(II) and Cu(II)-Cu(I) couples. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science S.A.
