Abstract
The ceaseless pressure to reduce inspection costs across all sectors o f industry is understandable, and measures such as CRINE (Cost Reducti on Initiative for the New Era), which is being applied in the offshore oil ann gas sector are to be expected. The author believes that Posit ive Materials Identification (PMI) can, in part, act as a cost-effecti ve balance against cutbacks in other inspections by providing the reas surance that the specified materials have been delivered and installed in safety-critical structures and components.
