This article illustrates how current assessment practice can be modifi
ed and implemented to match course objectives and promote active learn
ing, and the discussion is based on the second year In-House Practical
Training (IHPT) short course in the School of Mechanical and Producti
on Engineering (MPE), Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapor
e. The present practice in assessment is reviewed first, followed by p
ersonal reflections on the assessment procedure. Suggestions are made
to enhance the reliability and validity of such assessments, through t
he use of objective lists for students, guidelines for the assessors/s
upervisors and appropriate implementations. This proposal aims To ensu
re consistency of assessment not only among supervisors but also in an
individual supervisor.
