N. Davis et al., PEDAGOGY AND PROTOCOLS FOR COLLABORATIVE TEACHING AND RESEARCH THROUGH SUPERJANET AND ISDN IN HIGHER-EDUCATION, Innovations in education and training international, 34(4), 1997, pp. 299-306
The increasing bandwidth on the Internet between universities in the U
K has potential for multimedia communications in higher education, for
both reaching and research purposes. This article reports on a projec
t which developed person-to-person protocols for such communication an
d the pedagogic styles employed in a set of eight case studies. The pr
oject transferred previous experience with multimedia communications,
using ISDN2, between a university and partner schools into higher educ
ation. It also transferred experience with the 128K dedicated bandwidt
h of ISDN2 to the distributed architecture of 10 megabyte communicatio
ns employed in SuperJANET service. Additional new styles of pedagogy,
consultation and collaborative development became the most prominent m
odes. Styles such as these should assist staff to integrate IT into te
aching and learning in higher education.
