We discuss the effects of decoherence on fault-tolerant quantum comput
ation and how it leads to accuracy thresholds required before arbitrar
ily computations can be performed. We examine the feasibility of achie
ving these thresholds in an ion trap realization when spontaneous emis
sion is taken into account.
