A method is presented for generating superpositions of coherent states
of a cavity field via the atom-cavity-field Raman interaction. After
an atom has interacted with a cavity field, initially in a coherent st
ate, it is detected through the Raman coupling. Then the cavity field
collapses into a Schrodinger cat state.
