C. Everaerts et al., CHANGES OF SPECIES-SPECIFIC CUTICULAR HYDROCARBON PROFILES IN THE COCKROACHES NAUPHOETA-CINEREA AND LEUCOPHAEA-MADERAE REARED IN HETEROSPECIFIC GROUPS, Entomologia experimentalis et applicata, 85(2), 1997, pp. 145-150
The cuticular hydrocarbon profiles of the cockroaches Nauphoeta cinere
a and Leucophaea maderae are species-specific when maintained in homos
pecific rearings. When individuals were reared in mixed species coloni
es, they initially remained in homospecific groups under different she
lters. However, after 14 days they formed one heterospecific group wit
h cuticular profiles showing characteristics of both species. When ind
ividuals were returned in monospecific rearings, their cuticular hydro
carbon profiles returned to species-specific ones within 3 weeks.
