Abstract
Recent optical model analyses of near-barrier Li-7+ Pb-208 elastic sca ttering data found a peak in the energy dependence of W-OM the strengt h of the imaginary part of the optical model potential at the strong a bsorption radius. It was speculated that this might be due to the pola rization potentials produced by couplings to the Pb-208(Li-7,Li-6) Pb- 209 transfer channels. In this Brief Report we show explicitly that su ch couplings do indeed produce polarization potentials with the same e nergy dependence as that observed for the empirical optical potentials .
