Abstract
Several methods have been proposed for eliminating the unwanted depend ence of gain on the number of channels in multiwavelength EDFA's. Usin g a time-and spectrally resolved simulation, we compare two all-optica l methods of stabilizing output power per channel in chains of saturat ed EDFA's with changing numbers of channels, Both use all optical feed back, but one requires modifying only the first EDFA in the chain whil e the other demands that all EDFA's be gain clamped, We find that both can be used successfully but that each imposes different constraints on the EDFA's and on the network.
