Using a powerful postamplifier, a remotely pumped preamplifier, chroma
tic dispersion compensation and forward error correction, a repeaterle
ss transmission distance of 461 km has been achieved at 8 x 2.5 Gb/s.
This experiment demonstrates the possibility of using launch signal po
wers in excess of 1 W when the chromatic dispersion compensation is op
timized to minimize nonlinear impairments. In addition, 377 km has bee
n achieved by replacing the remotely pumped preamplifier with a distri
buted Raman preamplifier.
