Measurements of velocities in the boundary layer of a wind tunnel usin
g square-nosed, round and elliptical Pitot tubes of different sizes ar
e reported. The displacement of the effective centre from the geometri
c centre of the Pitot tube is found to be different from those given b
y some of the available relationships. A simple model has been develop
ed for the functional form of the correction for the displacement effe
ct and all available data on square-nosed Pitot tubes used to arrive a
t a method of correcting for the displacement effect in case of Pitot
tube measurements in shear flows.
